I wrote "The Debatable Land" initially as a piano sonata in 2012 at the Organ Haus in Minneapolis, MN. The name comes from a book I had about spiritualism by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in which there's a reference made to a potentially existing spirit realm called "The Debatable Land". This subject has been very important to me since I was a child looking for books on cryptozoology and the supernatural on my local library shelves, and I thought it was an incredible fit with the playful, mysterious, and sometimes forebodingly sorrowful passages of the piece. When I'm writing music, I often end up making something that makes me feel both happy and sad at once - a blend perfect for a world like the debatable land. What exists in a place like that? Is it a hopeful future, a depressing purgatory rut, or something else that can't even be imagined yet? It makes me excited just to wonder!!
The music of "The Debatable Land" consists of 4 main sections and they show up at various other point in my catalog. Variations on the first and last movements can be heard on my 2011 album "Laire Wesh" as the songs "Riding His Bike Segment" and "Noun On A", a version of "Malady" with drums can be found on "Comb Hair", also from 2012, and "Uncanny Lyllybye" resurfaces on 2018's "How More Can You Need?" as the song "Sleeping With The Dance (Dancing, Sleeping)". After the entire piece was composed, I took to my bedroom to turn it into my first synth sonata. The whimsical sounds of my Yamaha Portasound, blended with the effects of my digital multi-tracker, where bounced crisply to tape and made for I think a wonderful expression of this music. It was originally released in late 2012 as a split with my friend Collin Gorman Weiland on his label Never Ender, and I'm very proud to present this newly mastered version to you! "The Debatable Land" is a rich, washed out tapestry, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
